The Midtown Portsmouth Association is right to express opinions and concerns now, not later, on proposals for a revival of the mid-section of the city.
Consultant Ray Gindroz and his team heard last month from business and professional people who did not like proposals that would destroy much of the business area in and around the MidCity Shopping Center. As a result, the planners went back to Pittsburgh to rethink and redraw their suggestions for Midtown.
On Wednesday, Gindroz will meet with the Midtown group to discuss the revisions. By speaking up and presenting their thoughts early in the planning, the Midtown folks became involved in the planning.
Citizen involvement is the most important aspect of the planning now being done by the city because the citizens are the only people who can make it happen.
The public needs to speak up now. Once the city begins to put the plan in place, it does not need to run into roadblocks from citizens who do not bother to get involved now.
This plan may be the last chance Portsmouth has to move to its rightful place in Hampton Roads. by CNB
