JESSE L. KEARNEY SR.

Rev. Jesse L. Kearney Sr., 55, of the 1100 block of Horn Ave., an associate minister, died Nov. 3, 1994, in Maryview Hospital.

Rev. Jesse L. Kearney Sr. was born and educated in Princess Anne County. For over 38 years he preached the Word of the Lord. To many he was known as the ``Funeral Preacher''; preaching over 300 funerals in one year. His ministerial credentials were granted by both the Church of God in Christ and the Baptist.

Rev. Kearney served as the personal assistant to Dr. S.L. Scott in his pastorates at 4th Baptist, Portsmouth and Union Baptist, Virginia Beach. For many years he was employed by Hale and Twilight funeral homes. His faithfulness to area ministers, churches and funeral homes was unparalleled.

Rev. Kearney was a member of First Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk, Virginia. He was an active member of the Metro Baptist Ministers Conference, Interdenominational Ministers Conference and the Hampton Ministers Conference.

Of the home his mourners include his wife, Mrs. Shirley Rodgers Kearney, Jesse L. Kearney Jr., his son, and his mother-in-law, Mrs. Elsie Rodgers Wilson. His maternal nurturing was under the guidance and love of his sister Mrs. Antha Belle Capps of Virginia Beach. His sisters Evelyn Walker of Jersey City, Lessie Palms of East Orange and Diane Rosebough of Newark, brothers Marion, Larry, Kevin, Ronald and Derrick Johnson of Jersey City and Patrick Johnson of Virginia Beach mourn the loss of their brother; one aunt Elnora Butler and one uncle Bubba Stallings.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday at First Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. J.L. White. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Viewing at Corprew Funeral Home will begin at 2 p.m. today. The body will be taken to Fourth Baptist Church at 5 p.m. Monday for a wake service at 7 p.m. The body will be taken to the church at 10 a.m. Tuesday for the funeral service.
