UNITED WAY AWARDS GRANTS TO AGENCIES

Robert Hayes, chairman of the United Way of South Hampton Roads Board of Directors, has announced that several Norfolk agencies have been awarded grants to help them increase their outreach.

The funds were made available due to an increase in United Way pledge collections this year and will pay for capital projects.

The Houston Boys and Girls Club will get $12,851 to bring its natatorium and water filtration system up to Norfolk City Code. Norfolk Senior Center is getting $7,500 to renovate its adult day health care kitchen.

In addition, several agencies in South Hampton Roadswill receive grants: Jewish Family Service, $4,000 to fund a staff position for the agency's home health care director; and SEVAMP Senior Services, $3,449 to help purchase a new van. And shelters operated by the Dwelling Place, The Haven Family Center, Help and Emergency Response, PARC Place Shelter, Samaritan House, the Salvation Army and the YWCA will receive $20,000 to develop a regional combined effort to win grants from statewide and national sources.

Hayes said 19 United Way agencies will receive $100,000 under United Way's Special Human Needs Response Fund. by CNB
