In a pre-emptive move, North held a press conference Saturday to say his internal polls show the race much tighter. He predicted he would win by 3 percentage points.
A newspaper poll published today shows U.S. Sen. Charles S. Robb continuing to pull ahead of Republican challenger Oliver L. North heading into the final weekend of the campaign.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch survey shows Robb with an 8-point lead over North, 39 percent to 31 percent. Independent J. Marshall Coleman had 12 percent, with 18 percent undecided. The margin of error is 3 percent.
Other surveys in the last week have shown Robb moving ahead, but the Times-Dispatch poll is the first to show the Democratic incumbent with a lead larger than the margin of error.
Robb said the latest poll mirrors his campaign's internal polls, but he is taking nothing for granted.
``We realize he (North) has a well-funded get-out-the-vote effort,'' Robb told reporters while campaigning Saturday in Urbanna. ``. . . We haven't seen all of his $18 million.''
