Weary from four games in five days, Norfolk Academy didn't have the necessary bounce in its legs to contend with Hampton Roads Academy and lost in the TCIS boys soccer final Saturday afternoon, 2-0.
The Navigators got goals from Ben Pait midway through the first half and Griff Behncke midway through the second on their home field to finish the season 17-4.
Norfolk Academy plays in two soccer leagues, the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools and the Virginia Prep League, and both tournaments began this week. The Bulldogs (18-5) won quarterfinal and semifinal TCIS games Tuesday and Thursday, then had to go to penalty kicks to beat Trinity Episcopal, 2-1, in a Prep League quarterfinal Friday.
In addition, half the team took the SAT Saturday morning.
``It couldn't have helped them at all,'' said Behncke, who scored on a penalty kick after the Bulldogs' Jordan Jacobs tackled him from behind in the box. ``Playing three games in four days coming in takes it out of anybody. I was glad we had a day to rest while they played in the Prep League (tournament).''
Pait scored in the first half when he collected a throw-in from Bryan Beach and unleashed a powerful leftfooted shot.
The Bulldogs had their best chance to cut into the 2-0 lead when Ben Kottke drilled a shot off the right post after a frantic series around the Navigators' goal with 12 minutes remaining.
``I felt if I'd made that it would have put some wind in our sails,'' Kottke said. by CNB
