NO RECORD REVELRY FOR U.VA.'S DAVIS

Virginia wide receiver Tyrone Davis set a school record for career touchdown receptions Saturday. But Davis said he would postpone the celebration.

``I would trade the record right now for a victory, if I could,'' Davis said after the 28-25 loss to Duke.

``I am sure the record will mean a lot more to me after the disappointment of this defeat wears off.''

Davis now has 28 touchdown receptions, one more than the old record held by Herman Moore.

Davis tied the record with a 65-yard scoring pass from quarterback Mike Groh in the first period, and broke it on with a 6-yard catch in the end zone in the second period.

Davis had 3 catches for 107 total yards in the first half and none in the second half.

``Duke was using double coverage on me the second half,'' Davis said, ``and that made a difference.''

BOWL SCOUTS: Representatives from five bowls watched Duke end Virginia's six-game winning streak.

They were from the Fiesta, Peach, Hall of Fame, Independence and Liberty bowls.

The loss probably dropped Virginia from contention for the Fiesta, but both it and the Blue Devils are still in the running for the others.

SEEKING SPARK: Offensive coordinator Tom O'Brien said the Cavaliers changed quarterbacks in the fourth period looking for an offensive spark.

Symmion Willis took over from Mike Groh with 7:07 remaining.

``We planned to change earlier in the period, but we got a turnover and the ball on the Duke 5 and kept Groh in for that series,'' O'Brien said.

Groh threw a couple incompletions, took a sack, and then kicker Rafael Garcia missed on a 19-yard field-goal attempt.

Willis entered on the next possession and quickly launched a 69-yard scoring play to Pete Allen.

But he finished up with only one other completion and two interceptions.

LOUDEST CHEER: A sellout crowd gave the Blue Devils ample support, but the loudest cheer of the day came when it was announced that North Carolina was losing to Clemson.
