THE NEW KIDS RULE THE COURT THE LADY MONARCHS' RECRUITS SHOWED THE VETERANS HOW IT'S DONE IN A 40-31 EXHIBITION WIN.

The newcomers on the Old Dominion women's basketball team turned the tables on their veteran counterparts, outperforming the returning Lady Monarchs in nearly every category to score a 40-31 victory in the Blue-White exhibition game Saturday at the ODU field house.

``I was very, very disturbed with the intensity level of the veterans initially. The execution isn't there,'' said ODU coach Wendy Larry. ``But I was pleased with the chemistry and competitive edge of the newcomers. They looked like they were on the floor with a purpose.''

The Blue team, made up of the newest Lady Monarchs, scored the first 12 points of the game and led, 19-4, at halftime. Portugal's Ticha Penicheiro started at point guard and helped bury the White team by penetrating into the lane before passing the ball to an open teammate for an easy basket.

The White team shot a dismal .063 (1-for-16) in the first half and continued to struggle at the start of the second. The Blue team went on a 10-6 run to take a 19-point lead, their largest of the game.

``You could tell just by watching the game that we've spent more time working on defense than we have offense,'' Larry said. ``We haven't spent a great deal of time on our execution. But I was pleased with our pressure on the ball.''

Freshman center Nyree Roberts led all scorers with 16 points and four blocked shots. Blue teammate Clarisse Machanguana had 12 points, and Penicheiro chipped in with a game-leading six assists, three steals, and two blocked shots.

Shonda Deberry led the White team with nine points, six rebounds and two steals.

Returning players Angie Liston and Jill Berg sat out the game with injuries. Freshman Amber Eller aggravated an elbow injury midway through the second half and did not return to action. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
