POQUOSON 3S STOP NANSEMOND RIVER

Mandy Page scored 18 points and hit four momentum-swinging three-pointers as Poquoson topped Nansemond River, 49-38, Saturday night at Lakeland in a girls basketball playoff for the top seed in the Bay Rivers District tournament.

Both teams finished the regular season with 11-3 records, tops in the district, and will be considered co-champions. The teams split two regular-season meetings.

This marks the first year Nansemond River has won more than five district games since the school opened in 1990.

``I'm not really concerned about the loss tonight,'' Nansemond River coach Sandra McCray said. ``We're co-champions. What more can I ask for?

In the district tournament beginning Tuesday at Smithfield, the top-seeded Islanders (14-6 overall) will meet No. 8 Smithfield. The second-seeded Warriors (14-5) will face No. 7 Franklin.

Saturday's victory also gave the Islanders an automatic berth in the Group AA, Region I tournament.

The Warriors got off to a good start Saturday and led, 14-6, early in the second quarter. But Page drained her first trey and ignited a 12-0 Poquoson run. The Islanders led by four at the half.

The Warriors regained the lead on two occasions in the third quarter, the last time coming on a Bunny Williams free throw that made it 27-26. Page got her long-range game going again, though, nailing two three-pointers in the final 32 seconds of the quarter to send the Islanders ahead by four again.

Poquoson then poured it on in the final quarter and led by as many as 14.

Michelle Hirsch and Bonnie Tasillo each scored 11 points for the Islanders. Williams tallied 12 points and Janie Porter added 11 for Nansemond River. by CNB
