AMERICA'S HOMELESS NEED AID, TOO

President Clinton announced recently that the United States will spend $84 million for assistance to Haiti. This is another blatant example of misplaced priorities of Washington and our president.

Today in America, we have more than a million men, women and children who do not have a home. Approximately 270,000 are veterans - men and women who served our country gallantly in war and peace. They need the same kind of assistance that we now give so freely overseas.

These same men and women find themselves in harm's way because they are homeless and their plight is complicated by a lack of understanding by the public and our elected officials as to why and how they became homeless.

It's time we spend more effort and dollars to end this country's problem of homelessness instead of on ``foreign assistance.''
