Builders Square will close its store on at 1072 Mercury Blvd. in Hampton on Jan. 7. The company said the store is too small. The home-improvement store chain has no plans to replace its only Peninsula store. It also operates two stores in South Hampton Roads. San Antonio, Texas-based Builders Square, a subsidiary of Kmart Corp., will try to place the store's 99 employees elsewhere in the company or at stores owned by its sister companies, OfficeMax and Sports Authority. The Hampton store, which opened in 1986, is about 62,000 square feet, whereas the chain's new stores are nearly 150,000 square feet. Expansion of the store or relocation wasn't possible, according to the company. (Staff) by CNB
