OUTSTANDING GAMES CONCLUDE BEACH'S FALL SOFTBALL PROGRAM

The Virginia Beach Department of Parks and Recreation concluded its fall adult softball leagues with several outstanding city tournament games.

With the bases loaded and no outs, Mark Hubbard stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning, the first extra inning of the game. Hubbard didn't expect to hit the ball out of the park. He had hit no home runs all year. But that was exactly what he did.

Hubbard's first-ever home run cleared the bases, giving Telcon an 18-15 victory over William E. Wood in the coed recreational championship game. Telcon won a city adult softball title in its first year of play.

Coach Steve Milton said: ``We lost only one game. We had steady hitters and a great team effort. Maybe we'll move up a division next year.''

Maybe they ought to. Telcon scored runs like a football team in the playoffs. They beat Batter's Box, a team that went 13-1, by a score of 26-17 in the first round and pounded the 12-2 Tailgaters, 21-6, to advance to the championship.

Telcon played in Division C, one of 10 coed recreation divisions.

In all, 226 teams played in the fall softball league sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department and organized by Rich Sauls.

In other championship clashes, HiTides defeated C & S Lawn Service to win the men's unlimited title.

``That's the overall city champions,'' said Sauls. ``Each division could send two teams to play in the unlimited, so all the best teams played.''

HiTides also claimed their own division championship, men's class B, by beating Paramount Builders.

C & S rebounded from the loss to HiTides to win men's Class C with a victory over Yellow Freight.

The Tony Moore team took the men's duffer title by defeating Kelly's Karpets.

A team of women sponsored by Tony's Restaurant beat V & J Roofing to win the women's division title.

And in the hotly contested coed competitive division, heavy-hitting Hudgins Line Handling defeated Grover White to win the championship game.

Kelly's Karpets was one of four teams to complete the fall regular season with a perfect 14-0 record. Although they too lost in the playoffs, Gull Line Ltd., Croc's and the Muggers also went unbeaten in the regular season. Gull Line finished 12-0; Muggers, 13-0; Croc's, 14-0. All played in the coed recreation league won by Telcon.

HELPING THEM STAY AFLOAT: Beach District high schools and the recreation department have teamed up to give Beach high school swimmers their first varsity competition. Until now, student swimmers had to join local private aquatic clubs to compete.

High school practice begins Nov. 14 and meets will start on Dec. 2 at Bayside, Great Neck, Kempsville and Princess Anne recreation center pools on a rotating basis.

The meets will be held on Fridays from 2:30 until about 6 p.m. The season will end on Feb. 3 with a championship meet.

``We've had the largest sign up for this of any sport we've ever offered,'' said Bob Leedom, center coordinator at Great Neck.

HEAVY STUFF: Leedom said the Great Neck center will put on a powerlifting contest, Saturday at 9 a.m.

The contest is open to those 15 and older.

For more information, call 496-6766.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS: The six-team women's adult basketball season is concluding its 1994 season with a single-elimination tournament at Bayside Community Recreation Center.

The tournament began Oct. 30 and will conclude with the championship Nov. 12.

The six teams - LMA, M.I. Express, Lady Bandits, Lady Braves, Oldies But Goodies and the Misfits - played five regular season games.

M.I. Express went undefeated at 5-0.

In first-round playoff games, the Lady Braves beat LMA, 64-31, and Oldies But Goodies defeated the Misfits, 57-42, to advance.

T.J. Jones led the league in scoring with a 20-plus points per game average. Jones played basketball for Kellam High's state runner-up team before attending ODU. She now coaches at Lake Taylor High School.

Other outstanding performers in the league were Jackie Dolberry, Diane Corvello and Stacy Carr.

OWL CREEK TENNIS: Sally Rhodes and 13 teammates traveled to Palm Springs, Calif., to play in a national tournament from Oct. 6-10. The women, aged 30 to 50, were members of a 4.5 spring league team at Owl Creek Tennis Center, said Norman Korel, coordinator for the league.

Korel also coordinates the Virginia Beach Tennis Patrons Fall League at the tennis center. The spring league is sanctioned by the United States Tennis Association; the spring league isn't.

``We had about 1,000 players in the spring and about 650 in the fall,'' said Korel. ``The leagues are for players from 3.0 to 5.0 skill level.''

Guy Rule coordinates a USTA-sanctioned league for those age 50 and up that runs from June 15 to the middle of August. That league also had about 650 players last summer.

ADULT BASKETBALL AND VOLLEYBALL SIGN-UPS: Are being held from Nov. 14-22. Call Shannon Cox at 471-5887 for information.

MORE HOOPS: Cox also wants to spread the word about the adult open gym program. Hoopsters over 18 years of age can play basketball at the Lynnhaven Middle School and Princess Anne Middle gyms, Monday through Thursday, 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.

The fee is $2 per person, per night and the gyms will be open from Nov. 1 until March 31, 1995. by CNB
