BATEMAN AIDS GOP EFFORT TO TAKE CONTROL OF HOUSE

Republican Rep. Herb Bateman easily won his seventh bid for the 1st Congressional District seat, taking 75 percent of the vote over two challengers.

The 1st District includes the Eastern Shore and the Peninsula.

Bateman breezed to victory over Democrat Mary Sinclair and Matt Voorhees, who ran with the support of Lyndon LaRouche's organization.

Bateman's apparent victory follows a 14-year trend interrupted only by a strong challenge from television newsman Andy Fox in 1992. He has had little trouble in other campaigns.

In other Virginia Congressional races:

Fifth District incumbent L.F. Payne, a Democrat, was beating Republican George C. Landrith, 54 percent to 46 percent with 92 percent of the vote tabulated.

In the 7th, incumbent Thomas J. Bliley, a Republican, regained his seat with 84 percent of the vote. He defeated Gerald E. Berg, an independent.

Incumbent James P. Moran, a Democrat, easily defeated three challengers in the 8th, taking 59 percent of the vote. He beat Kyle E. McSlarrow, a Republican, R. Ward Edmonds, an independent, and William C. Jones, also an independent.

The race in the 9th saw incumbent Democrat Frederick C. Boucher take 59 percent of the vote in defeating Republican S.H. Fast.

In the 10th District, Republican Frank R. Wolf crushed two independents with 88 percent of the vote. He beat Alan R. Ogden and Robert L. Rilee.

Virginia contributed one volley to the Republican assault on the House of Representatives: 11th-district challenger Thomas M. Davis, who toppled Democratic Rep. Leslie L. Byrne with 50 percent of the vote. Independent Gordon S. Cruickshank garned 4 percent of the votes in the Northern Virginia district. ILLUSTRATION: Graphic
