2 CHARGED AFTER APPARENT CASE OF DOGFIGHTING

Two men were arrested Monday night when police responding to a dogfight found one injured pit bull terrier and one dead chicken.

Police and animal control officers responded to call in the 2700 block of Monticello Ave. about 6:55 p.m.

``When the officers arrived at the location 12 people fled the scene,'' police spokesman Larry Hill said Tuesday. ``However, officers recovered one dog with injuries and one dead chicken.''

Animal control officers said the chicken had probably been used to train the dog to attack other animals. They also said the dog had been injured fighting other dogs.

Police have charged the pit bull's owner, Andre L. Graham, 23, of the 800 block of E. 28th St., with failure to have a dog license, and failure to have the dog vaccinated.

Hill said Steven M. Wiggins, 24, of the 1200 block of W. 40th St., the owner of a business at the Monticello address, was charged with having an unburied animal - the dead chicken - on his property.

``We would encourage citizens whenever they see any incidents of dogfighting or cruelty to animals to give us a call on our Crime Line,'' Hill said.

Hill said the dog was taken to the animal shelter and was doing fine.
