Bayside and Tabb advanced one step closer to qualifying for next week's Group AAA field hockey tournament with Eastern Region quarterfinal victories Tuesday at Cox High.
Peninsula District runner-up Tabb stated the action with a 2-0 victory over Eastern runner-up Booker T. Washington, earning the unenviable right to play five-time defending state champ Cox (16-0) in today's noon semifinal.
Beach runner-up Bayside breezed by Eastern winner Maury, 5-1, and will play Peninsula champ Lafayette (11-1-3) at 2 p.m.
Cox and Lafayette received byes into the semifinals, where both winners will advance to the state tournament to be held Nov. 17-19 at Oakton High in Vienna.
Tabb (13-2-2) scored quickly - earning a penalty stroke 1:03 into the match when Bookers (8-4-2) keeper Alicia Fields trapped a sure goal with her feet. Amber Bodner blasted in the stroke.
Bodner scored again with 9:28 left in the game when she tapped in a loose ball in front of Fields.
Bayside (15-2) went on a scoring binge midway through the first half - scoring three times in 11 minutes on two goals by Dawn Bell and one by Kay Anderson. Anderson assisted Bell on her shot, and Jen Moricle assisted Anderson on hers.
Maury (8-6-1) - which has won every Eastern District title - got in the game with 3:15 left in the first half when Sally Roman nailed in a pass from Beth Nottingham, who had taken a penalty corner feed from Katie Roman.
But the Marlins wasted little time in regaining the momentum early in the second half when Quan Nim blasted in a backhanded shot after taking a crossing pass from Anderson five minutes into play.
Angie Hebron rounded out the scoring with 11 minutes remaining - taking a free hit from Jennifer Winfree and blasting a shot past Commodores keeper Melanie Mushill.
Bayside finished with an 18-2 shooting advantage. ``But we started slow,'' Marlins coach Patti Bullock said. ``In the second half, we started putting it together. They corrected the problem on their own at halftime.'' by CNB
