AQUATIC VEGETATION BEING HARVESTED IN LAKE WHITEHURST WEST

The Norfolk Department of Utilities has begun its Lake Whitehurst West aquatic vegetation harvesting operation, the first drinking water source preservation and restoration of its kind in Hampton Roads.

The operation consists of removing nuisance aquatic vegetation from the lake using a harvester, a bargelike vehicle that cuts the plants and removes them from the water, preserving the lake's beauty and maintaining the quality of the drinking water.

With citizen input, Norfolk has been planning the project for a year, and preliminary harvesting began in early August.

Excessive plant growth in Norfolk's in-town reservoirs has become a nuisance. Lake Whitehurst West, where suburban development began almost 50 years ago, has had the most severe problems. by CNB
