MARTHA R. SMITH

Funeral services for Martha Reid Smith, a retired seamstress of Marietta, Ga. were held Nov. 5, 1994.

Mrs. Smith was born in Norfolk County, now Chesapeake, Dec. 7, 1918. She was predeceased by her parents, the Rev. Annias and Mary Odom Reid; her husband, William David Smith, and three sisters, Luvenia R. Sheppard, Laura R. Simmons, and Ella Mae R. McCoy.

In her early years she rendered a ministry of playing the piano and singing in churches around Norfolk County. In 1936, she moved to New York, working as a domestic, and joined Cornerstone Baptist Church, Brooklyn, N.Y., where she was a Sunday School teacher in the primary department. In 1991, she moved to Marietta, Ga., where she joined a Senior Citizen Club.

Although declining in health, each summer she returned to Chesapeake for family reunions. This summer she returned and then went to New York. She returned to Georgia and her illness progressed until she expired.

Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis E. Hyatt, Brooklyn, and Cassaundra Smith, Marietta; two granddaughters, Tawn E. Smith and Jocelyn Yearns; five sisters, Thelma R. Clemons and Sarah R. Gilchrist, Chesapeake, Gertrude Jenkins, Long Island, N.Y., Corine Cross, Portsmouth, Evelyn Doxey, Virginia Beach; two brothers, Dr. Milton A. Reid, Norfolk, and Herbert L. Reid, Edgewood, Md.; and a host of relatives and friends.
