KEMPSVILLE, GREEN RUN EACH BRING STAR TO SHOWDOWN

One team boasts a 13-game winning streak and the area's premier quarterback.

The other team enters with an eight-game winning streak and the area's most proficient running back.

When co-No. 1 Green Run (9-0 overall, 8-0 in the district) and No. 3 Kempsville (8-1, 8-0) battle tonight for the Beach District championship - much of this week's schedule has been moved up a night to avoid playing on Veterans Day - all eyes will be on Stallions quarterback Glenwood Ferebee and Chiefs running back Mike Pishioneri.

Ferebee, a 6-foot-1-inch, 164-pound senior, leads the area with 17 touchdown passes in only seven games. In the last two weeks, he's thrown nine touchdown passes while completing 18-of-32 attempts for 426 yards.

Pishioneri, meanwhile, leads the area in scoring with 20 touchdowns. The 5-10, 185-pound senior has rushed for 1,044 yards and has gained 307 yards and scored eight touchdowns in the last two weeks.

In other games of note:

Deep Creek, which shares the No. 1 ranking with Green Run, hosts No. 4 Western Branch. The Hornets can complete a perfect regular season and clinch top-seeding in the Division 5 region playoffs with a victory.

Lake Taylor seeks to keep its playoff hopes alive against Maury at Chittum Field.

Norfolk Academy goes for the Colonial Football Association championship against Catholic at Harbor Park.

Nansemond River seeks at least a share of the Bay Rivers District title at home against Lakeland.

A capacity crowd of 5,000 is expected at the Kempsville-Green Run game, where both coaches expect the game to be decided at the line of scrimmage.

``Our line play will determine the outcome,'' Green Run coach Elisha ``Cadillac'' Harris said.

``But you never hear about linemen playing well,'' Kempsville coach John Bowles said. ``If the police were ever looking for you, you'd do well to get a job on an offensive line because nobody ever looks there.'' ILLUSTRATION: Color photos
