When he played junior high basketball, Chris Elmore used to dream of one day playing for the North Carolina Tar Heels.
The sport might have changed, but the dream is about to come true.
Elmore, a lefthanded pitcher from Green Run High, said Wednesday that he will sign a full baseball scholarship with the University of North Carolina Friday after entertaining offers from Auburn, Virginia, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech and Old Dominion University.
``UNC was kind of a lifetime dream,'' said Elmore, who ranks sixth in his graduating class and is considering majoring in engineering. ``They are losing their top three starters after this year and don't have a lefty in the starting rotation.
``(UNC coach Mike Roberts) has told me I can probably step right in and start, although he's not promising anything.''
As a junior, Elmore posted a 7-0 record and a 2.10 earned run average and was a first-team All-Tidewater selection.
College coaches cannot comment about prospects until they sign. But Gary Spedden, Elmore's high school coach from last season, said, ``Chris has been clocked at 85 miles per hour and has an exceptional breaking ball. He'll probably be drafted next spring.''
Elmore said that signing during the fall's early signing period would benefit his senior season.
``I've been finding that 30 minutes of homework ends up taking four hours because of all the phone calls from coaches,'' Elmore said. ``After signing, everything should calm down a bit.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo
