Coach Wendy Larry says the Lady Monarchs are ready to be the hunted team in the Colonial Athletic Association.
If Wednesday night's exhibition game is any indication of the season, Old Dominion is ready for the kill. The Lady Monarchs scored 50 second-half points as they rolled over Croatia, 82-57, at the field house.
The Lady Monarchs, three-time defending CAA champions, had four players score in double figures. Sarah Willyerd had 14 points, Clarisse Machanguana 12 and Shonda Deberry and Amber Eller each added 11. Machanguana, a 6-foot-4 native of Mozambique who played on that country's national team, also knocked down a game-high 15 rebounds.
``I like being hunted from the intensity standpoint of hunting,'' Larry said. ``We're finally an underdog in the CAA.
``Before Celeste (Hill) was able to handle the difficult role of being hunted. Now, I guess since we had four players in double figures, it will be hard to key on any one of them.''
The Lady Monarchs bring a new look to this season. Gone is three-time CAA player of the year Hill, as well as fellow starters Deanna Vander Plas and Lateefah Robinson.
Eller, a freshman from Fayetteville, N.C., leads a class of newcomers that includes Machanguana and Portugal's Patricia Penicheiro.
Larry said if anything was lacking, it was execution.
``We haven't spent a lot of time on our offensive execution,'' she said. ``We need to work on making a smoother transition from offense to defense.''
