Motorists traveling to and from Elizabeth City on U.S. 158 in Camden County were warned Thursday by a N.C. Transportation Department engineer to be ready to shift down to slow-burn next week.
``On Monday we begin widening U.S. 158 in the Pecan Farm section between State Roads 1139 and 1244 and there will be single-lane traffic, flagmen, and all that,'' said Allen Russell, assistant highway engineer at the DOT regional headquarters on U.S 17 north in Elizabeth City.
Russell said the widening would result in a three-lane section where U.S. 158 is now two lanes.
``We'll be able to provide a turnoff center-section by adding six feet to the road on each side,'' he said. ``And we won't have to go beyond the ditch line into property facing the highway.''
``With good weather,'' Russell said, the widening will be completed in about two weeks. by CNB
