For the fifth time in recent weeks, a gun has been confiscated from a vehicle in the parking lot of Salem High School.
The person who was charged was not a student, and said he was at the school to pick up friends.
Shawn Fender, 20, of the 8200 block of Edwin Drive in Norfolk, was charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds, a felony. He was released after posting a $1,000 bond.
The weapon was a pellet rifle.
The gun was discovered as classes were being dismissed for the day.
Officers Chris Hession and J.R. Johnson of the 4th Precinct found the weapon after noticing that the car Johnson was driving had neither an inspection sticker nor a city sticker. The rifle was in the back seat.
This was the ninth time since classes began Sept. 7 that police have made arrests after gun investigations at Virginia Beach schools. Eleven guns have been confiscated.
Fourteen guns were found in city schools in the 1993-94 school year.
Guns have been confiscated this year from students or former students at Green Run, Tallwood, Salem and Bayside high schools and at Landstown Middle School.
