Miami-area residents spend the greatest share of their incomes - 31.3 percent - on rental housing, while those in Houston spend the least, according to the Census Bureau. Median monthly rent in Miami was $493. Houston's $406 median rent was just 23.2 percent.

The highest median rents were in Anaheim, Calif., at $790, which took 29 percent of the median income. The lowest rents were in Pittsburgh at $365 a month, taking 26.6 percent.

Hampton Rds.: $480, or 27.2 percent

Los Angeles: $626, or 29.5 percent

San Francisco: $709, or 28 percent

Philadelphia: $516, or 27.4 percent

Boston: $656, or 26.7 percent

Chicago: $491, or 26.3 percent

Atlanta: $529, or 26 percent

Washington: $667, or 25.9 percent

New York: $503, or 25.7 percent

Baltimore: $490, or 25.3 percent by CNB
