A couple of the CIAA's big fish will square off today in the 47th annual Fish Bowl at Harbor Park.
Virginia State (6-3, 5-2 CIAA) hosts Winston-Salem State (6-4, 5-2) at 1:30 in a game that will decide second place in the conference.
``We've been able to play well,'' Virginia State coach Lou Anderson said. ``How long that will last I don't know.''
Anderson's main concern figures to be slowing down Winston-Salem tailback Richard Huntley, who ran for a CIAA-record 361 yards on 30 carries last Saturday in a 54-16 win over Virginia Union. Huntley's performance landed him on ESPN and made him the CIAA's all-time career rusher, with 4,159 yards.
``He's a two-way runner,'' Winston-Salem coach Kermit Blount said. ``He'll run over you or around you. The more he runs, the stronger he seems to get.''
Look for Huntley to run a lot, then. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound junior needs just 123 yards to break the CIAA single-season mark of 1,699.
Getting them against Virginia State won't be easy, though. The Trojans have been strong defensively, giving up just 2.5 yards per carry on the ground.
The Trojans have also played well on the road.
``We have not had what you might call a home-field advantage,'' Anderson said. ``This will be our eighth road game, out of 10. And all six of our wins have been on the road.''
Living out of suitcases hasn't seemed to bother the Trojans.
``I think it speaks pretty well of us,'' Anderson said.
