With only eight girls at the start of the field hockey season, it didn't look like their would even be a season for coach Terri Sawyer and the Virginia Wesleyan field hockey team.
But after her players went through the dorms and the classes to recruit six girls, the Lady Marlins went on to post the best record (7-5) in school history, earning Sawyer Old Dominion Athletic Conference coach of the year honors.
``A lot of of ODAC coaches are people I have played with or played for,'' said Sawyer. ``They recognized the work and all of the adversity I had to overcome.''
Aside from not having enough girls Sawyer had to deal with the new 16-day practice rule, which only allows that many days of practice before the season.
``That was a big setback,'' said Sawyer. ``We weren't able to have much of a preseason.''
``Coming into the season I was really excited, we had a good core of returning players with great attitudes,'' said Sawyer. ``When we needed more players, I had a heart to heart talk with the eight girls and we pulled together.''
Led by sophomore sensation Monica Saltarelli, who scored 12 of the team's 16 goals, the Lady Marlins were able to host the first round of the ODAC tournament for the first time in school history. They were ousted by Roanoke, ending the roller-coaster season.
