ADMIRALS SEND LANG TO COLUMBUS, PLACE 2 ON INJURED RESERVE

The Hampton Roads Admirals reduced their roster to 17 Friday by selling forward Bill Lang to the Columbus Chill and placing Dennis McEwen and Tom Menicci on the injured reserve list.

McEwen, the only player left from the Admirals' first season six years ago, was scheduled to come off the 15-day injured reserve list Friday and play against Greensboro. However, the Admirals deemed his sprained ankle insufficiently healed.

He was moved to the 30-day list, meaning he must sit out an additional 15 days. He will be eligible to play Nov. 26 when the Admirals travel to Richmond. Menicci is out with a wrenched back, said assistant coach Al MacIsaac, and can also come back against Richmond.

Lang, a 20-year-old rookie who played junior hockey last season, had four assists and 19 penalty minutes in 11 games.

``We called Columbus,'' MacIsaac said. ``We knew somebody would want him, but we wanted him to have the chance to go to a good situation. Columbus has great fans and a good organization and needs some players.''

ON TV: The Admirals make their debut on Home Team Sports tonight at 7 at Greensboro, but say they're not preparing any differently to play in front of television cameras.

``This is no different than any other game,'' defenseman Chris Phelps said. ``The object of the game is to win whether it's on TV or not. We're preparing like we do for any other game.''

HTS reaches nearly 3 million cable homes in five states and the District of Columbia, but does not broadcast in the northeastern United States or Canada, where most of the Admirals make their homes.

Many of the Admirals relatives and friends will be watching on satellite TVs.

``I talked to my parents and they're going to a sports bar in Boston to watch it,'' said Ron Pascucci, a Massachusetts native and Boston College alumnus.

``A lot of my games in college were on television. It's a big deal the first time, but after the novelty wears off, it's like any other game.''

Kenny Albert, HTS's voice of the Washington Capitals and son of NBC broadcaster Marv Albert, will do the play-by-play on HTS.

DINING OUT: Want to eat dinner with some of the Admirals? Eight Admirals will dine at the Spaghetti Warehouse on Wednesday from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m. in a promotion to benefit the Tidewater Literacy Council.

The Spaghetti Warehouse, on Monticello Avenue just north of downtown in a renovated warehouse, will donate a portion of all sales that night to the literacy council. ILLUSTRATION: Photos
