After losing 5-0 to James Madison during the regular season, Old Dominion had something to prove to in a rematch in the semifinals of the Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer tournament Friday at William and Mary. The Monarchs got it done everywhere but the scoreboard.
ODU outran, outhustled, and generally outplayed James Madison, battling the Dukes to a scoreless tie after regulation. The Monarchs scored with 6:27 left in the second overtime, but the Monarchs allowed James Madison to tie the game and then fell short of their quest for the CAA title with a 3-1 defeat in the shootout.
``This hurts because we came here to win it all,'' said Old Dominion coach Ralph Perez. ``We played our best game of the year. ... I really feel for these guys because I was hoping that some things would break their way.''
James Madison caught a break with the game tied, 1-1, at the end of the second overtime, when a yellow card to Graham Perkovich allowed coach Tom Martin to substitute goalie Barry Purcell at one of the forward positions. Backup keeper Brian Bailey had started the game, but only players who have already entered the game are allowed to participate in the shootout.
The only other way the Dukes could have gotten Purcell in the game would be to deliberately kick the ball over their own end line.
``(Getting Purcell in) was a big factor because Bailey was hurt,'' said Martin.
Bailey injured his back at the start of the second overtime period. ``I felt he could dive (for the ball) if he had to, but not five straight times,'' said Martin.
James Madison (18-2-1) scored the first point of the shootout when Kaarlo Kankkunen beat Monarchs goalie Nathan Olansen into the bottom left of the net. Jason Shedlock missed high on his kick to give the Dukes a mini-break.
James Madison missed its next attempt and Mike Moyer evened things up for Old Dominion when Purcell guessed wrong on a shot into the left half of the net.
The two teams traded misses until Patrick McSorley put the Dukes ahead by again beating Olansen left. Old Dominion's Devin Payton missed his kick, and Perkovich gave James Madison a shot for a third straight CAA title with a shot over Olansen's shoulder.
In the other semifinal, Billy Owens scored the only goal of the game on an assist from Greg Richards at the 30:03 mark in the first half as top-seeded William and Mary defeated George Mason, 1-0.
