Mayor Meyera E. Oberndorf left Friday on a two-week mission to China to develop trade opportunities between the Asian nation and Virginia Beach.
Oberndorf, who will be accompanied by Jerry Stewart from the city's Department of Economic Development, also will seek Chinese investment for the City of Virginia Beach.
``This is an excellent opportunity to promote the City of Virginia Beach to a nation that is critical part of our global economy,'' Oberndorf said in a prepared statement. ``I look forward to meeting with Chinese leaders and letting them know about business opportunities in our city.
``As chairman of the U.S. Conference of Mayors Committee on International Affairs, I plan to use this visit to China not only to promote economic development in Virginia Beach, but also to expand my knowledge about this fascinating part of the world.''
Her itinerary includes stops in Hong Kong, Zhaoquing, Panyu, Guangzhou, Beijing, Shenyang and Jinzhou.
She will return Nov. 23. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
