AREA WHEELCHAIR BOWLERS SHINE

Local wheelchair bowlers are rapidly moving up among the nation's best.

Craig Richards recently placed second in the B Division of the National Wheelchair Tournament in Las Vegas.

Two other local bowlers competed in B Division and also fared well. Ken Reid was a 12th-place finisher and Anna Korchak was 21st. Korchak was the high woman qualifier in the division.

The same three went to Tampa, Fla. for a regional meet. Reid won the B Division after being the leading qualifier.

Richards competed in A Division and finished ninth. Korchak was fourth in B Division.

In league play the past season Reid carried a 98 average for 78 games. Richards posted a 129 average for 66 games. Korchak bowled in two leagues, carrying averages of 98 and 93.

Bowler of the Week honors go to Chris Baron, who went on a 700-series spree in three tenpin leagues at Indian River.

Baron fired a 265 game and 753 series in the Tuesday Nite Mixed League. He posted a 289 game with 10 strikes in a row on his way to a 770 in the Big Chiefs League. And he had 705 in the Ford Mixed League.

The nine games total 2,228 for an average of 247.5 per game.

Tenpin topics: Tim Followell joined the 300 Club with a 12-striker in the PWC League at Pinboy's of Norfolk. He followed with games of 245 and 235 for a 780 series. Followell now has high game, high series and high average (201) in the PWC loop. . . . Andy Keller and O. T. Holton IV both were a pin shy of 300 games in the Monday Scratch Doubles League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake. . . League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake, 279s by Mike Miller in the Friday Mixers League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake and Shawn Warren in the Big Chiefs loop at Indian River, 277 by Sonny Drake in the Big Chiefs and 276 by Patrick Nettles in the Weekenders League at Pinboy's of Military. Miller's game earned him a Century Club award. He averages 168. . . . Joe Mollner beefed up his 149 average with a 637 series in the P. A. Suburban League at Pinboy's at the Beach. . . . Lupita Fowler, who averages 132, had her first 200 game of the season in the Saturday Classic Mixed League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake. . . . Wayne Hubbard, a 115-average bowler in the Junior All-Stars at Pinboy's of Norfolk, rolled a 255 game. In the Major/Senior League at the same center Jerry McConnell had his first 500 series, soaring to 560. . . . Wally Danner flipped a 288 game and Renita Rock shot a 268 in the Funseekers League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven. . . . Leslie Livesay slammed a 279 in her 695 in the Charles Peete League at Pinboy's of Norfolk. . . . Jeff Keller had a very balanced 239-234-241 for his 714 in the Saturday Classic Mixed at Pinboy's of Chesapeake. . . . Carrie Paisleywas 11th and Fran Sansone 15thin the annual Queens Tournament at Springfield. The winner was Lisa Rend of Annandale. . . all-mark 181 in the Federal Mixed League at Pinboy's of Norfolk. . . . Junior bowler Paul Eahuya notched a 611 series at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven. He averages 164. . . . Paula Overbay, a 149 average shooter, zipped to 603 in the Friday Misfits League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven. . . . Major/Senior Leaguer Nick Brock, who averages 126, won Century Club honors with a 236 game. . . . Entries in the 1995 ABC Tournament are nearing the 16,000 mark, an all-time record. Entries do not close until Jan. 5. The tournament begins on Feb. 5. . Pennsylvania has 208 centers with eight lanes or less. And there are more eight-lane houses across the country than any other size. . . . Today's tip: if your bowling ball goes thump-thump-thump down the lanes, rolling over the thumb hole, make this correction in your delivery - keep your hand behind the ball with the thumb pointed out during your arm swing. . . . Duckpin data: Donnie Long had an all-mark 212 game in the Tidewater Pro League en route to his 496 series. A four-fill on a double strike cost him a 500 series. . . . Jim Boykin converted the 5-7-10 for a spare in the Industrial League. . . . The first round of the Portsmouth Match Game Championship concludes today at 5 p.m. at Victory Lanes. . . . Bowlarama held its annual bowlathon for St. Judes on Saturday afternoon from noon until 5 p.m. with all proceeds going to charity. There was no charge for games. . . . The 460 series by Daren Kleiber in the Sunday School League was an all-time high for the former youth league bowler. . . . A 176 single powered Joanna Cubilla to a 406 series in the Tuesday Major Trio League. . . . A newcomer to duckpin leagues, Wes Garriott, registered a 441 series in the Industrial League. He upped his season average to 124. . . . A 426 set in the Tuesday Major Trio now has Wilton Drury averaging an overall 138 for two leagues. . . League. . . . Senior leaguer Lucy Barnes pitched a 371 at Bowlarama. . . . Area centers will be holding qualifying for the $15,000 Duckpin Classic prior to Dec. 31. The national finals will be on Apr. 29-30 at Town Hall Lanes in Johnston, R. I. Entry fee in the qualifying is $18 and there is no fee for those advancing to the finals. by CNB
