Although voters spoke overwhelmingly in favor of an elected school board in Portsmouth, the prospect of these elections in 1996 is unnerving.
In recent years, citizens have been left angry and frustrated by the closing of two high schools and other actions precipitated by dwindling school populations and shrinking budgets.
Sometimes they do not understand the reasons for school board actions because they view a situation from a personal point of view and are unable to see the overall picture.
Portsmouth at this time has an open, hard-working school board that seems to be getting the schools on the right track. Let's hope the elections in 1996 do not derail their efforts that should be paying off by that time.
