NORFOLK MAN HOSPITALIZED AFTER BEING HIT BY HIS OWN CAR

A 59-year-old Norfolk man was in critical condition Saturday night after being run over by his own car when it was hit from behind while he worked on it.

The man, whose name was withheld until relatives could be notified, was being treated in the Trauma Center at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Police said the man's car stalled about 6:05 p.m. as he was driving on Great Neck Road near Upper Chelsea Reach. There was no place for him to turn off the road in the area where it stalled.

The man had gotten out of the car, gone to the front of it and was opening the hood when his car was struck from behind by a car driven by Jennifer L. Kuchno, 24, of Richmond.

The man stopped breathing briefly and had to be resuscitated by rescue personnel before he was taken to the hospital with multiple injuries.

Police said the man did not activate the emergency flashers on his car when it stopped, but the parking lights were on.

They said Kuchno's car was going about 45 mph when it hit the stalled vehicle. The speed limit in the area is 45 mph.

Kuchno was charged with reckless driving for inattention, police said. Alcohol was not a factor in the accident.
