U.VA. HOPES WIN WILL END TALK OF LATE-SEASON SLUMP

Virginia's 46-21 victory over Maryland may have ended talk of late-season collapse for the time being, but coach George Welsh seems sure it could come back again.

The Cavaliers have slumped late in the season the last two years, and the talk began last week following the loss to Duke.

``I don't think we've ended it completely because we still have two games left to play,'' Welsh said.

``We have won one game in November before.''

Several players made it clear, though, that they had heard enough of the slump talk.

``People can say what they want to say, and come watch us play or not,'' cornerback Joe Crocker said. ``We are going out there and win, regardless.''

PEACH VISITS: The victory was the sixth against Division I-A competition for the Cavaliers, officially qualifying them for a postseason bowl invitation.

The only bowl represented at Saturday's game was the Peach Bowl in Atlanta.

SACK LEADER: Sophomore tackle Todd White led the defensive assault against Maryland quarterback Scott Milanovich.

White, from Baton Rouge, La., had three of Virginia's five sacks.

Meanwhile, linebacker Jamie Sharper got credit from defensive coordinator Rick Lantz for playing a key role in the sacks.

Lantz said Sharper provided the coverage that denied Milanovich the chance to dump the ball off.

JUST SHORT: Tailback Kevin Brooks, who had his second two-touchdown game of the season, came up 4 yards short of his second 100-yard game.

The former Great Bridge High School athlete finished with 96 yards on 21 carries.

DAVIS AILING: Wide receiver Tyrone Davis sat out most of the second half because of a turf toe injury.

Davis, who had one catch for 20 yards and one for a two-point conversion, vowed to be back for Saturday's game against Georgia Tech.

THIS WAY: Fullback Charles Way's two-touchdown performance was his best since he scored three touchdowns in last year's 43-29 victory over Maryland.

Way scored on runs of 11 and 13 yards, and zipped through the line to the goal untouched each time.

``Our offensive line just did some fantastic blocking,'' Way said. by CNB
