Leon W. Smith Sr., of the 100 block of 217th Place, retired director of health hospital corporation, died Nov. 10, 1994, in North Lake Medical Center, Tucker, Ga.
Mr. Smith was born in Portsmouth. He had retired from Gouverneur City Hospital in New York City after 30 years. He was a former member of Third Baptist Church, Portsmouth, and was a U.S. Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice D. Smith of Stone Mountain, Ga.; four daughters, Anita Borden, Stepfaine Johnson and Lenice Smith, all of New York City, and Verlon Wilson of Plainfield, N.J.; a son, Leon W. Smith Jr. of New York City; his father, Sylvester Smith of Portsmouth; a sister, Ruth M. Smith Franklin of San Diego, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; a niece, Javonda Franklin, and a nephew, Leonist Franklin, both of San Diego, Calif.; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, adopted daughters and sons and friends.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Corprew Funeral Home Chapel, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Leon J. Boone. Burial with military honors will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Viewing will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the funeral home. The family will be at the home of his brother-in-law, Clifton Jones, 2010 Piedmont Ave., Portsmouth, and will assemble there for the funeral service.
