Ceremonies honoring Americans killed during wars this century will continue next weekend in southwest Virginia.
Observances were held across the country Friday for veterans and those killed in wars, but the Tazewell County Board of Supervisors and town councils in the county have declared Sunday will be Memorial Dedication and Veterans Appreciation Day.
The Bluefield, Richlands and Tazewell chapters of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Tazewell County post of the Disabled American Veterans will unveil two 8-foot stone monuments Sunday at the National Guard Armory in Richlands. The monuments will honor soldiers from World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and other conflicts, organizer Bill Hall said.
One monument, which lists the names of area soldiers killed in the two world wars, will be unveiled by Vivian Reed, the sister of Cpl. Jack Reed, who was killed in action in World War II.
Robert Wright will unveil the monument paying tribute to area soldiers who were killed in the Korean War, the Vietnam War and other conflicts. Wright is the son of Spec. 5 Grover Wright, who was killed in Vietnam.
The ceremony will conclude with a flyover by the 94th Fighter Squadron of the 1st Fighter Wing of Langley Air Force Base in Hampton. by CNB
