A 20-year-old man was killed early Sunday when the pickup he was riding in left the road and ran into a tree on South Military Highway, police said.
The identity of the man, who is in the Navy and stationed in Norfolk, was being withheld until relatives could be notified. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The accident occurred about 5:30 a.m. Sunday as the truck was heading east on Military Highway, just before the Chesapeake border.
Police said the driver of the 1991 Ford Ranger, Brian McKnight, 22, of Henderson, N.C., was critically injured. He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital as was the other passenger, Sharon Holden, 18, also of Henderson. She was being held for observation at the hospital Sunday afternoon.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. No charges had been filed by Sunday afternoon.
