Ben E. Babb, 69, of Ivor Road, died Monday, Nov. 14, 1994, in a Franklin hospital.
Mr. Babb was a lifelong resident of Southampton County. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and returned to Southampton County initially to farm and later to be a logging contractor until his retirement. In addition to being a pioneer in modern logging, he was a well-known entrepreneur, horseman and sportsman. He was a lifelong member of Courtland United Methodist Church. Among his civic and social activities, he was a charter member of Manry Hunt Club and at the time of his death, he was hunt master and vice president, a position he had held for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Poole Babb; his mother-in-law, Edith Poarch Poole of Courtland; one son, B. Emmett Babb Jr.; three daughters, Edith Rose, Anne Railey and Esther Barksdale; and seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Babb, Frances Babb, Stephanie Rose, Davis Rose, Edward Railey, Benjamin Railey and John Barksdale, all of Courtland; a brother, William Babb of Suffolk; three sisters, Irma Rawlings of Courtland, Mildred Strickler of Hampton and Mary K. Greig of Charlotte, N.C.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Wright Funeral Home, Franklin. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Courtland. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Courtland United Methodist Church.
