RHETT OWENS: GRAIN COMPANY MANAGER

Rhett Owens considers himself one lucky guy.

Just one week out of Virginia Tech, Owens landed a job with the Virginia/Carolina Peanut Cooperative in Franklin - doing what he wanted to in the field of agriculture.

And at the cooperative, Owens did it all. He performed maintenance and even worked as a yard supervisor, making sure the mechanics of the business ran well when peanuts were brought in.

Four years later, he was working for Ag Suppliers in Newsoms, where farmers bring in peanuts and grain. It's also a place for farmers to load up on supplies, Owens said.

This summer, Owens, 25, made another change when he took on the responsibilities of manager of Walters Grain and Supply in Windsor, where more than 400 farmers drop off grain each harvest season. The grain is then loaded onto rail cars and shipped to various destinations, many going to the Midwest.

``It's a lot more hectic,'' he said. ``There's always a lot going on at one time. And I have more contact with the farmers now, and I like that. They're the reason I like what I'm doing,'' he said.
