JOINT THANKSGIVING SERVICES SCHEDULED

IN 1789, George Washington issued the First Thanksgiving Proclamation:

Whereas it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly implore His protection, aid and favors . . .

Now, therefore, I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day of November next, to be devoted by the people of these states to the service of that great and glorious Being, who is the Beneficent Author of all good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country, and for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

In the spirit of Thanksgivings past, many local churches will gather together this year to offer praise and thanksgiving to God for our nation and our individual lives.

For nearly 40 years, the churches of Chuckatack Village have come together for a joint Thanksgiving service of worship and celebration. Leonard Russell, pastor at Whitehead's Grove, will participate in prayers and the reading of Scripture.

``I celebrate this coming together of churches,'' Burns said. ``I think it's a wonderful tradition that needs to be maintained.''

He will share a message titled ``Partnership in the Gospel'' taken from the text of Philippians 1:2-11.

Special sacred music will be directed by Betty Glasscock, director of music at Wesley Chapel. A combined choir from the participating churches will perform. And congregational singing will include such traditional favorites as ``Now Thank We All Our God,'' ``Come Ye Thankful People Come'' and ``We Gather Together.''
