Commander Walter G. ``Smitty'' Smith, U.S. Navy (Ret.), died Nov. 15, 1994, at his residence.
Cmdr. Smith was born in Boston, Mass. He was a Navy pilot and retired from the U.S. Navy after 27 1/2 years of service. He also served as a licensed real estate broker with several Tidewater firms for 20 years before retiring again in 1990. He was an avid golfer and a member of Sewells Point Men's Golf Association.
His wife, Mary Bain Smith, predeceased him. His survivors are a son, Michael B. Smith of Virginia Beach; four daughters, Patti Smith of South Nyack, N.Y., Susan Smith of Brookfield, Conn., Sam Kamps of Richmond and Katie Smith May of Norfolk. He is also survived by a brother, Major Edward J. Smith, Ret., of Mecco, Fla.; and 11 grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday in Immaculate Conception Chapel, N.A.S., Norfolk, Building U-53, Gate 3, with Chaplain Ronald A. Soutiere officiating. Burial will be in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family invites everyone to join them at the Social Room at 100 E. Ocean View Ave., Nansemond on the Bay, following the graveside service.
The family will receive friends today from 7 to 9 p.m. at Kellum Funeral Home, Pleasant Hall, Kempsville Chapel, where a Rosary will be said at 7:30 p.m.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Healing and Restoration Ministry, c/o the Rev. Edward J. McDonough, CSSR, Mission Church, P.O. Box 299, Boston, Mass. 02132-9901, to the American Cancer Society or to one's favorite charity.
