NEWPORT NEWS POLICE SEEK MOM, CHILD IN ABDUCTION CASE

A 17-month-old girl missing since Oct. 20 is believed to have been abducted by her mother, police said.

Newport News police have a felony warrant charging Laurie Ann Evans, 23, with kidnapping her daughter, Ashilei Ross, Detective Mike Lewis said. Eva Ross, Ashilei's paternal grandmother, and Evans' mother, Alice Taylor, of Pine Bluff, Ark., say they fear their granddaughter is in danger. But police said there is no reason to think Evans would harm her daughter.

A judge had awarded temporary custody to Ashilei's father, Stephon Ross, and restricted Evans' visitation, Lewis said. The court forbade Evans from keeping the child overnight, Eva Ross said.

Evans picked up Alishei at Eva Ross' house the morning of Oct. 20 and was to return her at 6 p.m. At 7:30 p.m., Evans called to say she would be late, but never showed up, Eva Ross said.
