COX LOOKING TO BREAK RECORDS IN TOURNAMENT

Cox enters today's state Group AAA field hockey tournament seeking a national record 10th state title and sixth in a row.

The Falcons' nine state championships tie them with Stowe, Vt., for the most overall, according to the National High School Sports Record Book. Cox also is tied for the most consecutive state titles with Stowe and Concord, N.H.

The Falcons (18-0) have outscored opponents 96-2 going into today's 1 p.m. quarterfinal against Albemarle (5-7-5) at Oakton High.

Four teams have completed a season allowing only one goal, according to the National High School Record Book. Should Cox advance to the title without allowing a goal it would tie for fifth all-time in fewest goals allowed in a season.

Cox coach Nancy Fowlkes and junior Kim Miller are also poised to move up in the national record book.

Fowlkes - the state's winningest coach - is eighth all-time and three victories shy of taking sixth.

Miller, who has scored 44 goals this season, needs two goals to move into 10th place on the single-season scoring list. She has scored 91 career goals and needs 15 to move into the all-time top 10.

Miller and senior teammate Kirsty Hale (86 goals) rank first and second, respectively, in state scoring history. Hale has 39 goals this season.

Lost in the hoopla surrounding Cox is Bayside, making its first trip to the state tournament.

Bayside (16-4) plays North Stafford at 3. The Marlins have lost only to Cox this season.

If recent history repeats, Bayside will get another crack at Cox. Beach teams have faced each other in three of the four years since the Group AAA format went to eight teams.

Bayside is led by senior Quan Nim (23 goals) and junior Dawn Bell (20).

North Stafford has scored 36 goals and allowed 19. ILLUSTRATION: AAA FIELD HOCKEY
