SPCA'S `CAN WAGON' FOR PETS ROBBED

A thief sneaked in and stole half the aluminum cans from the Society for Prevention to Cruelty to Animals huge ``can wagon'' Sunday night.

On Monday night someone took the rest.

``I can't believe someone would take the cans that other people have collected to help the animals,'' said SPCA education director Susan Wagner. ``They not only robbed the SPCA, they robbed the people who went to the trouble to help us.''

Recycling aluminum cans is one of the nonprofit SPCA's fund-raisers. SPCA supporters save their soft drink and beer cans and drop them off at the can wagon, which is in the shelter's parking lot at 3040 Holland Road.

Last year the SPCA made more than $8,000 from the recycling project. The money goes toward feeding and caring for homeless animals.

Three years ago a thief also made off with the SPCA's aluminum cans. The can wagon is not locked so it is convenient for the public to drop donations off during non-working hours, Wagner said.

It will still be convenient to drop cans off, she added, especially now that over a week's worth of cans have been stolen.

``Please,'' Wagner said, ``make a special effort to save them for us.'' by CNB
