Chesapeake can take pride in being the first city in Hampton Roads to reach its goal in this year's United Way campaign. And an ambitious goal it was - exceeding for the first time the $1 million mark.
Donald S. Buckley, chairman of the local campaign, and the thousands of volunteers and contributors who supported the fund-raising effort are to be congratulated.
The caring people of Chesapeake responded to the needs of others, sharing their burdens, as good neighbors always do. Benefiting from their generosity are the victims of catastrophic illness, battered women and children, people with physical, mental or emotional handicaps, families without enough to eat, adults who can't read, senior citizens and young people, and working parents who need affordable day care.
Once again, and spectacularly, Chesapeake has made the United Way its way.
