PLEASED, THEN DISMAYED

I was very pleased when it was announced that your paper had hired a new editorial page editor with conservative leanings - John Barnes.

I was pleased not because I know Mr. Barnes - I do not - but because at least it would be a change from the very liberal bias of your editorial writers.

There was an immediate change in the tone of your opinions that was more in line with my thinking and, I believe, that of many Hampton Roads residents.

I was dismayed to see that John Barnes had resigned because of a ``difference over management style that we were unable to bridge.''

It will be very difficult for me to continue reading your editorial page and subscribing to your paper. I do hope that Mr. Barnes lands with a paper where his talents and conservative style will be appreciated.
