Former Princess Anne standout Tommy Holland has accomplished what no other cross country runner at Appalachian State has ever done.
Holland won the 1994 Southern Conference individual title with a time of 24:37 in the 8,000 meter at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga.
Holland also earned conference most valuable player of the year honors for his efforts.
With the win, Holland, a redshirt sophomore, qualifies for the NCAAs in Fayetteville, Ark., which begin Monday.
``Everything just came together for me well,'' Holland said. ``I worked real hard and I think that having a little more talent helped.''
Holland also accomplished another first at Appalachian when he placed 14th at the NCAA District III Regional Meet. Holland was also a Freshman of the Year pick in 1992.
``After running so long, things just start to come together,'' Holland said. ``Each year through hard work and dedication you progress. I have a lot further to go.''
OLD DOMINION FIELD HOCKEY: Lady Monarchs coach Beth Anders is one of the ``Faces in the Crowd'' in this week's issue of Sports Illustrated. Anders was cited for having led ODU to its 14th consecutive appearances in the NCAA Division I field hockey tournament.
ODAC FOOTBALL UPDATE: Guilford tailback David Heggie was named the ODAC Conference Player of the Year. Heggie rushed for 1,207 yards and eight touchdowns on 210 carries. He also rushed for over 200 yards twice. . . . Emory and Henry coach Lou Wacker was named ODAC Coach of the Year for the third time. He led the Wasps to an 8-2 record and a 4-1 league-championship mark. . . . Guilford took a page out the of the Buffalo Bills' history book against Salisbury State. Trailing 28-7 at the half, the Quakers scored 27 points in the fourth quarter to defeat Salisbury State, 40-37. Quaker quarterback Santes Beatty passed for 218 yards and three touchdowns. . . . Wes Dearing of Hampden-Sydney was named ODAC Offensive Player of the Week. Dearing rushed for a career-high 147 yards on 19 carries, caught two passes for 63 yards and scored two touchdowns. . . . In the 100th game of the oldest small college rivalry in the south, Hampden-Sydney defeated Randolph-Macon 24-10. . and Hampden-Sydney all finished in a three-way tie for second.
JMU FIELD HOCKEY: The Dukes will take on Northwestern in the Division I semifinals, Saturday, in Boston. . . . Eileen Arnaldo (Kempsville) is fourth on the team in scoring with six goals and four assists for 16 points. Other locals are freshman Holly Garriott (Kempsville), junior Heather Hoehlein (Cox) and sophomore Kelly McDonald (Cox). . . . The Dukes finished third in the final Division I field hockey poll. . . . JMU outscored its opponents 82-17 this season. Carol Thate led the team in scoring with 39 goals and 10 assists for 88 points.
VIRGINIA WESLEYAN SOCCER: Jim Hickling (Kempsville) finished the season with 25 goals breaking the old single-season scoring record of 21 set by Jon Sturmfels in 1991. . . . Other Marlin records: most goals: 102 (old record 82 in 1991), most wins: 20 (tied '91), highest scoring average: 4.3 per game (3.6 in '91), most assists: 91 (63 in '91), highest total points: 295 (227 in '91) and most shutouts: 13 (tie '91, '92).
NORFOLK STATE WRESTLING: The Spartans entire 10-man roster is nothing but Virginians. Local wrestlers include: Charles Daniel (First Colonial), Nathan Kennedy (Deep Creek), Chris Smith (First Colonial), Corey Williams (Princess Anne) and Felton Woodson (Deep Creek). . . . In the 14th annual Pembroke University Wrestling Classic held at Pembroke State Wednesday, Charles Daniels (167) won a 3-2 decision over Eric Dixon (Georgia State). For his efforts, Daniels was named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament. Daniels was the only Spartan to win his match. . . . The Spartans' next match will be at the Old Dominion University tournament on Saturday.
CNU REPORT: The Captains' cross country team won the NCAA South/Southeast Regional, earning its first bid to the NCAA Division III national championship since 1984. Sophomore James Ratcliff (Western Branch) won the individual title with a course-record time of 25:58. Ratcliff has won all seven races this season. He was named the region's Athlete of the Year and coach Dave Sobal was named coach of the year. . . . Nicole Horn (Great Bridge) was the top Lady Captain finisher in the regionals. She finished 34th with a time of 20:18. . . Matt Bryant (Deep Creek), Sean Phillips (Kellam), Tracy Stith (First Colonial) and Eric Vaughn (Bayside). . . .
