AGAIN - UNTIMELY BRIDGE OPENING

Outrageous! For the umpteenth time, the overseers of the Steel Bridge on Dominion Boulevard have defied logic and opened the bridge during the rush hour, creating a huge backup.

By what stretch of the imagination can this action be justified? Even as everyone continually debates ways to alleviate traffic congestion in the Great Bridge area, one of the major headaches creating the very congestion they are discussing continues unabated.

How can it be that waterway traffic, consisting mainly of pleasure craft with no particular schedule, is allowed to take precedence over all of us Citizen Toms and Janes traveling to and from work to earn a buck?

It seems to me that a realignment of priorities is long overdue. Those responsible for the operation of the Steel Bridge and the bridge at the Great Bridge Locks need to wake up. If they are stumped for possible solution, they need not look any farther than the Berkeley Bridge in Norfolk, which remains closed during both the morning and afternoon rush periods except in emergencies.
