Roger Brown ran for 118 yards and three touchdowns and Shamus Jones added 109 yards rushing and 22 receiving as third-seeded Matoaca upended host Southampton, 26-6, in a Group AA, Division 3, Region I semifinal Friday.
Brown scored on runs of 3, 7 and 14 yards to give the Warriors (8-3) a berth in next week's region final against Nottoway, a 32-2 victor over Bruton.
``We believed we'd be able to run the ball like that,'' said Matoaca coach Patrick Manuel. ``But not that effectively. I'm proud of the way we performed; I know many people picked us as the underdog.''
Matoaca also intercepted Indians' quarterback Brad Davis three times, converting one into a touchdown. However the first may have been the most important.
Down 7-0 after Brown scored with 5:31 left in the first quarter, Southampton (9-2) did not threaten until late in the half. But on third-and-4 and the Matoaca 25, Cornell Lewis picked off a Davis pass with 57 seconds left and the half ended with the Warriors in possession.
Matoaca marched 92 yards following the second-half kickoff, aided by an offsides penalty. But the big play was a 76-yard burst by Brown. Quarterback Michael Medley then scored on a 2-yard keeper for a 13-0 lead.
The Warriors then sacked Southampton quarterback Brad Davis on consecutive plays, presenting the second-seeded Indians with a third-and-31. Davis then threw an interception, giving Matoaca the ball at the Southampton 25, and Brown scored on a 7-yard run two plays later.
The Indians, who failed to score after driving to the Matoaca 12 late in the third quarter, finally broke through in the fourth on a six-play, 67-yard drive in which Davis had all three of his completions - two to Raymond Brown for 49 yards and a 12-yarder to William Brown. William Brown capped the drive with a 2-yard run to trim the deficit to 19-6 with 7:22 remaining.
But Matoaca went 78 yards on seven plays, icing the game on Roger Brown's 14-yard touchdown run with 3:39 left.
Two Southampton penalties on third down gave Matoaca a pair of first downs as the Warriors sustained a 62-yard drive on their first possession, scoring on Roger Brown's 3-yard run.
