Health experts Friday night warned homeowners with wells not to drink the water or use it for cooking if the wells were overrun by floodwaters from Gordon.
The water could be polluted, and, if it must be used, should be boiled first, said Dr. Harry Johnson, director of environmental health for the Dare County Health Department.
After the flooding ends, he said, the wells can be treated by pouring in a gallon of household bleach. All taps should be cleared of polluted water by running them until the bleach can be smelled, Johnson said. MEMO: Related stories on pages A1, A8 and A9.
