Anne Marie Duggan, who briefly bowled out of this area when she became a regular on the Ladies Pro Bowlers Tour, has become the LPBT all-time single-season money winner.
Duggan has won $118,652. It shattered the old mark of $113,750 set by Robin Romeo in 1989.
Duggan is happy that the chase for the record is over.
``I think that I put pressure on myself that was truly unwanted,'' she said. ``But I was also reminded every week about the record, and it is hard to put it out of your mind when there are constant reminders.
``When you are chasing someone, there is a lot less pressure than when you are being chased. You are one person chasing one person, but when you are on top, everyone is after you.''
Duggan first came to this area to bowl in the $100,000 AMF Cobra Classic at Indian River Lanes in 1989. That's when she met a local bowler, Pat Duggan.
The following year Pinboy's of Chesapeake was opening, and Pat was scheduled to be the manager.
The day the center opened, Pat and Anne Marie were married.
And what a day it was for the Duggans.
``Anne Marie helped me drill 40 bowling balls. Then we got a league started at 2 p.m. Then we left to get our marriage license. Then we picked out a ring. We found a justice of the peace off Cedar Road and were married at 5:30.
``At 10 minutes of 6 we were back at Pinboy's to get the night league started,'' said Pat.
They tied their mobile home to the back of the bowling center.
The next day, Pat informed Pinboy's owner Dwight Mitchum that he was relinquishing the job to serve as a coach and manager for his wife on the tour.
It's been that way ever since, and Anne Marie credits much of her success to the coaching she has received from hubby.
At Pinboy's of Chesapeake, Pat had Anne Marie throwing 20 practice games every day.
And the afternoon I watched her practice I well remember the words Pat spoke:
``I think in the past Anne Marie has just been satisfied with being in the top 24 (in tournaments). She is better than that. She can bowl with any of them.
``I think she can be one of the great bowlers.''
Her new money record proves Pat was right.
BOWLER OF THE WEEK honors go to Woody Riggs, a 113-average duckpin bowler who joined the ultraexclusive 200 Game Club.
Riggs fired the nine-mark 200 en route to a 436 series in the Thursday A.M. Mixed League at Victory Lanes, the first 200 game at this center this season.
His open frame was a 7-10 split. Riggs made a two-pinner and filled with five in the last box to exactly reach the 200 and win a fourth-level National Duckpin Congress Award.
Riggs opened with a 105 and finished with a 131.
