ALFRED W. SOTER

A.W. ``Buck'' Soter, 76, died Saturday, Nov. 19, 1994, in Riverside Regional Medical Center.

Buck, born in 1918, was a native of Newport News and one of 10 children born to George N. and Agnes E. Soter. He was a graduate of Newport News High School, 1936, and the Newport News Apprentice School, 1941.

Following his assignment to the Industrial Engineering Division of Newport News Shipbuilding, Buck became affiliated with Noland Company in Industrial/Machine Tool Sales from 1949 to 1952. In 1953, he associated with Mr. Frosty Seafoods as sales and marketing representative and later became president of sales, where he served until the sale of the firm and his subsequent retirement in 1977. He was honored by the Southern Frozen Foods Association as man of the year in 1976.

As to his industry affiliations, Buck was a member of the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce, the Virginia Seafood Council, the National Fishery Institute, and director of the Southern Frozen Foods Association.

Within the community, Mr. Soter was a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, a founder of the Knights of Columbus Council 5480, (55 year, 4th degree member), board member of the Seamen's Friend House and numerous other civic and charitable organizations. He was a 1993 honoree of the National Conference of Christian and Jews.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Hodges Soter; a son, Alfred Ernst Soter; a daughter-in-law, Valerie M. Soter; a son, Walter Anthony Soter, all of Hampton; a daughter, Dorothy Catherine Soter of New York City, N.Y.; a son, John Hodges Soter and a daughter, Agnes Carolyn Soter, of Newport News; brothers, George N. Soter of Hampton, Charles L. Soter and Ernst J. Soter of Newport News; sisters, Agnes S. Peterson of Sun City, Ariz., Claire M. Soter of Norfolk, Cynthia S. Horan of Newport News. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Herbert and Joseph T. Soter; sister, Dorothy A. Soter; and infant son, James M. Soter.

A funeral service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, Father Michael McCarron, Presider, Father Frederick Annie, Homilist. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park, Wednesday at 10 a.m. The family will receive friends at the church Tuesday from 5 p.m. until time of service.

The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Riverside Medical Hospice Center or to the Peninsula Catholic High School Building Fund, 332 34th St., Newport News, Va. 23607. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
