Walter R. Handy Sr., 96, a retired salesman, died Nov. 20, 1994, in Norfolk.
Mr. Handy was born in Wilkes County, N.C., on Jan. 22, 1898, son of Thomas Frieland Handy and Mary Jane Myers Handy. He was retired from Corkran Hill & Co., a subsidiary of Swift & Co. He was a member and past deacon of Bayside Baptist Church and a member of Cornerstone Men's Bible Class, Senior Citizen Pep Club and Bayside Masonic Lodge (NU)218, AF & AM.
Survivors include his wife, VElla Harris ``Vee'' Handy; a daughter, Mary Catherine, and her husband, Grey M. Cassell of Brandywine, W.Va.; a son, Col. Walter R. Handy Jr., USAF (Ret.) and his wife, Linda M. Handy of Roanoke; a sister, Pearl Blevins of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; two brothers, Lawrence J. Handy of Winston-Salem, N.C., and Clyde Handy of Hays, N.C.; four grandchildren, Grey M. Cassell Jr. of Brandywine, W.Va., Stephen A. Cassell of Winston-Salem, N.C., Christin M. Handy of Boulder, Colo., Stacey Handy of Roanoke; a great-grandson, Jordan Cassell of Harrisonburg, Va.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Conrad Handy, and sisters, Lenora Caldwell and Ennis Brown.
A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Bayside Baptist Church by the Rev. Bruce Minett, the Rev. Paul Carter and the Rev. Tom Pendergrass. A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Sunset Hill Cemetery, Littleton, N.C. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel. A Masonic service will be at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to Bayside Baptist Church, Music Department.
